Colon Therapy

The colon is the sewage system of the body. It collects toxic waste from every part of the body and, by the peristaltic wave of its muscles, remove this waste from the body. Incomplete elimination is a form of constipation. Symptoms are weight, fatigue, irritability, mental confusion, bloat, gas, indigestion, lethargy, headaches, migraines, earaches, sinus drainage, allergies, cellulite, anxiety, depression, pessimism, whining, unsatisfied hunger, poor circulation.

Some lifestyle factors that slow down bowel transit time and increase waste buildup in the colon:

  • Eating high-fat, low-fiber foods that are over processed, over cooked and devitalized. The main dietary offenders are animal products, salt, sugar, flour, chemicals, and drugs.
  • Not drinking enough good, clean water.
  • Consuming caffeine in coffee, tea, chocolate, and colas, which dehydrate the bowel and interfere with proper digestion.
  • Mental and emotional stress, which inhibit proper digestion, assimilation, and elimination

Laxatives act as irritants to stimulate the muscular walls of the colon, abnormally contracting to expel the irritant. Laxatives also create dehydration in the body, so layers of old, dried feces remain in the colon, and only the more recent feces are pushed through the center and evacuated. This leads to degeneration in the tissues, muscles, and nerves of the colon.

Colon hydrotherapy begins the process of gently cleansing and regenerating the colon, so that proper assimilation of nutrients and waste disposal can be optimized.

Colon hydrotherapy was first recorded in 1500 B.C. and Hippocrates in the 4th and 5th century B.C. used enemas for fever therapy. Members of the Lewis & Clark Expedition were instructed by a physician on the use of enemas in the case of fever and illness.

Colon therapy comfortably flushes the entire length of the bowel, versus only the first 5-10 inches of the bowel with an enema. During the process, the gravity-fed, filtered water gently flows in and out of the colon. The treatment is designed to cleanse the entire length of the colon, approximately 5 feet. The goal of each session is to hydrate the system, remove waste, stimulate peristalsis, rehabilitate the nerves, muscles, glands, circulatory and immune systems that form the components of the digestive system, and to reposition the intestines.

At Wholistic Kinesiology Center, Inc. we use disposable instrumentation to avoid contamination of equipment.  In addition, we use a special filter designed to remove Chlorine, Pesticides, Heavy Metals, Bacteria, Algae, Mold and VOC’s from the water that is used during your treatment.

Since the equipment is a closed unit, no odor is present. The outflow of water removes excess gas, mucus, feces, and toxic material directly to the sewer line. During the emptying cycle, the hygienist may gently massage the abdomen to loosen and work the gas and feces from the colon and to stimulate peristalsis. Using varying degrees of warmer and cooler water, the hygienist creates the process of relaxing, contracting and toning the muscular walls of the colon. When it is cleaner and healthier, elimination is easier, and over-all health is enhanced. These treatments are relaxing and soothing. The individual is always completely covered thus maintaining dignity.
Some individuals are concerned that colon hydrotherapy washes out the friendly bacteria. The fact is colonics evacuate harmful bacteria and help to balance the intestinal flora. Also, implants of friendly bacteria can be added to the colon.

Preparing for a Colon Therapy Session

‘This is much easier than I expected’
is the comment I hear after the first colon therapy session.

  • Stop drinking fluids 2 hours before the session and eat light if at all. Your abdomen will be massaged and you will need to urinate less if at all during the session.
  • Arrive on time or early without a rushed manner. You are treating yourself. You are taking care of yourself. Give yourself the time and space to appreciate the experience. The intestines work best when they are relaxed, when the parasympathetic nervous system is predominant. Our hydrotherapy environment is designed for relaxation and rest.
  • Menstruating women may receive colon hydrotherapy. It is helpful for PMS and does not interfere with the woman’s cycle. Women up to their fifth month of pregnancy may receive colon hydrotherapy.
  • Follow any medical guidelines you have been given if you have diabetes or any other compromising illness. Continue to consult with your physician for your health concerns.
  • It is not necessary to fast before a colonic. If you are familiar with fasting, you know it is a good thing to do in unison with colonics. If you've never fasted before, I recommend having a colonic first and learning more about your body's needs before jumping into a fast.
  • Sometimes it’s helpful to use other types of hydrotherapy to accompany the colonic in order to relax the gut muscles. The Far Infrared Sauna can be helpfull.
  • For anyone with constipation or dehydration, taking an enema or colema the days preceding the colonic is of great help in facilitating the colonic.
  • It is helpful to be tested for a detox program with your Kinesiologist along with a colon therapy program.

Additives
Chlorophyll: Chlorophyll nourishes and oxygenates the body, builds blood, promotes peristalsis and alkalinizes our over acidic bodies. The fresh water algae like spirulina, blue green and chlorella, ocean algae and wheat grass are rich in chlorophyll.
Acidophilus:  Many people have dysbiosis coming into the colonic or an imbalance in gut flora. That means more pathogenic bacteria, fungi, virus and parasites than friendly roam in your gut. We may use probiotics or positive bacteria to implant and restore floral balance in the colon. Acidophilus, and others such as bulgaricus and thermophilus are the primarily used.
Castor Oil Packs: Castor Oil Packs are used to soothe abdominal tightness, cramping or pain and to loosen impactions. If needed your therapist will rub cold pressed castor oil onto your abdomen and cover with a piece of wool flannel. Then wrap a piece of plastic around your waist covering the flannel, cover again with a shirt or towel and apply a hot water bottle or a heating pad set on medium.

Some things to consider:
Many of us have a considerable amount of impacted waste in our colon accompanied with muscle, nerve, immune and hormone deficit. Substantial work must be done. The second and subsequent colonic therapy sessions may release more material as your body tunes into releasing, muscles become suppler, the area becomes more hydrated and bacterial/fungal sources of nerve damage are reduced.

Depending on your objective. One or 2 colon therapy sessions may be all that's necessary to recovery from travel, flu, fever, back or headache, transient constipation or a small fast or cleanse. However, overcoming lifelong constipation, creating multiple bowel movements, overcoming illness and achieving vital health may require regular sessions for some time. It has taken years to create your current body condition. One has to factor in body condition, how well you respond, and possible needed lifestyle and attitude changes.

After your first colon therapy session, you can discuss with the therapist how many sessions you might need and how often. Many people benefit from doing a series of anywhere from 5 to 25 colon therapy sessions to bring the body back into balance. One might begin with 1 – 5 in the first week, then going to once a week, once every two weeks and then longer periods for maintenance depending on the individual condition.
