Acupuncture is known to have been used for
5000 thousand years. It came about by the use of dull rocks
pressed on the skin at specific points on the body to relieve
illness. Through trial and error acupuncture advanced to
the use of metal needles. During ancient times in China
a doctor was paid by the local villagers to keep them healthy.
However, when an individual fell ill his pay was withheld
until the individual felt healthy again. Although it would
be nice if this style of health care were practiced today
acupuncture has been a treatment of choice for centuries.
Today disposable stainless steel needles are used. These
needles work by influencing the balance of Qi (“chee”)
or life energy that travels through our bodies. Qi travels
by way of meridians or pipelines that are mapped out all
over our bodies. When these meridians surface the outer
parts of our skin we find acupuncture points. At these points
the Qi that is contained in the corresponding organ can
be balanced to a state of absolute function. For example,
if an individual has symptoms of dry skin, fatigue, brittle
hair, pale tongue, a thin pulse, and pale nails this individual
is said to be “Blood Deficient”. At that point
specific group of acupuncture points are chosen to regulate
the balance of Qi and Blood to which ever organ may be out
of balance. The needles are inserted into the skin and left
there for up to an hour. Acupuncture is nearly painless
and its atributes are outstanding.
